FoBCA Newsletter 2021 No 5

We are nearing the end of the year, and starting to focus on the December breakaways. However, no rest for the wicked yet - below is a rundown of all our recent activities, and some still to come..

 Year-end get-together

Please join us for a quick get-together before the end of the year.  It would be lovely to meet up face-to-face with the members again.  (Covid-19 protocols will be adhered to, so do not forget to wear your mask.)

Date:  Sat 11 Dec 2020

Venue: EE Cabin at Eerste Steen (remember to bring your membership card for free entry)

10h00-11h00: Please come and grab a plastic bag and help us clean the beach area in front of Eerste Steen.  The South-Easter is upon us and the amount of litter is increasing.  It is important to have our Green Status beach area cleaned for all the season's visitors to enjoy!

11h00-12h00: Boerewors rolls will be sold, so come and enjoy them right there, while catching up with fellow Friends, or take home to your family for lunch.  We hope to see you there!

Friends of BCA AGM

Our AGM was held virtually on Thursday 16 Sep.  Thank you to all those who attended – we trust you gained insight into all our activities as well as our financial position – a big portion of our income is from you, our members.  Welcome to Santie Coetzee, a new committee member.  Santie has been heading up the Beautifying West Coast initiative, and we already feel the energy and enthusiasm she is bringing to the FOBCA.

Apart from the normal proceedings, there was a very interesting talk by Chris Murphy called ‘The Old Highway Revisited’.  The talk can be found here.  Do yourself a favour and follow Chris’s journey from Morning Star to Clanwilliam.  The N7 will never be the same again – you will WANT to turn off the road to see Moorreesburg’s wheat museum for instance, or to see what is behind the sign to Bridgetown and why it was called that. Some of the beautiful old buildings in Piketberg are also discussed – a town most people just drive past.

Beach Clean-up

The coastal clean-ups are still occurring regularly every month-end, and we urge you to join in this worthy effort.  Litter never sleeps, so to speak, and it is an ongoing challenge to retain the Green Coast status of the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve’s coastal area.  You can pop in any time between 08h00 and 13h00 for as long as you wish.  Just bring a mask and sun hat, and a litter pick if you want (a long braai tong also serves the purpose).  Plastic bags will be provided.

Christmas Gifts

Why not buy someone a nature-related gift this year?  We are some items featured below for fund-raising.  These items are ideally priced, and make a gift that will last forever.  Please place your orders by sending an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. Card decks: There are 2 types of card decks for sale at R80 each:- ‘Beautiful birds of South Africa’ and ‘Cape Floral Kingdom’.  Each card has a different flower/bird on it, and will cause great fun in quizzes and card games.  You can learn while you play!

Flower Guide:

Our Flower Guide is an old favourite.  It is a handy size for carrying and flowers are quick and easy to find with its colour-coded search facility.  It shows you which flowers bloom in which month as well.  They sell at R100 each.
